Martha Newport, Owner, Lead Agent
Broker/REALTOR®, PMP®, LEED Green Associate

After 15 years in Marketing and Project Management at IBM, Martha wanted to help people more directly in her community. With her love of home renovations, personal finance, and working with people, real estate seemed like a natural fit. After flipping a foreclosure (at a 24% profit!) Martha walked away from corporate life to focus on real estate full time. Now she can't imagine doing anything else!

Originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, Martha has been a resident of Chapel Hill/Carrboro for over 12 years. She has two children, and is in the loop on current school district assignments for both English and Dual-language programs, as well as proposals for future changes. She volunteers for PORCH, a grass-roots hunger relief organization whose mission is to collect and distribute food for families going hungry in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro community.

Shelby Bishop, Agent
Broker/REALTOR®

Shelby comes to real estate from a diverse professional background that includes over 13 years in the outdoor retail industry as an owner, manager, merchandiser, and buyer. Her passion for helping people navigate big decisions – and keeping them light and fun – owes as much to her retail background as it does to her early career experiences coordinating volunteers and athletes for Special Olympics, and as an art therapist working with adults with mental illness.

Originally from coastal South Carolina, Shelby moved to Carrboro in 2010 to be a part of a more welcoming community for LGBTQ families. She and her partner, Sunny, an art education professor at UNC-Greensboro, have a blended family of three children, two cats, and a black Lab mix. Their children attend Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and as a family enjoy the arts, outdoor life, and the easy social atmosphere of downtown Carrboro.

As the team's lead buyer’s agent, customer service is Shelby’s number one priority. Her goal is to find the right property and help people discover what they really want.  With her tireless energy, creative spirit, and good humor, she will make buying a home as exciting and painless as possible.

Ellys Bishop, Showing Specialist Broker/REALTOR®

The transition to Real Estate was an easy one for Ellys after years of experience in customer service. She began working with clients at a local hair salon before moving on to retail throughout the Carolinas. A native of the lowcountry in South Carolina, Ellys moved to Carrboro in 2015 to be closer to her family.

With a love of fashion and design (and an aunt like Shelby), real estate quickly became second nature. Her ability to help clients visualize their home’s potential led to her important role as staging and showing assistant.

When she’s not dashing all over town, Ellys enjoys spending quality time with family, hanging out at one of her favorite coffee shops or partaking in one of her many hobbies (art, journaling, singing...you name it, she can do it!) Her dedication and contagious positive energy is the perfect combination for the MNRG Team & clients!

Crystal Shores, Operations Manager
Broker/REALTOR®

After working in sales and marketing for 12 years, Crystal made the transition to real estate in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. Her knowledge and passion to help others led her to work as a real estate broker both independently and on a team. She worked hard to ensure that all her clients were educated and guided through the home buying and selling process.

That hard work continued as she joined the Martha Newport Realty group in 2018. Crystal quickly became a resource for clients, agents, vendors and attorneys to help all parties secure a smooth transaction from start to finish. Whether it’s helping prepare a home to go on the market or walking clients through the necessary paperwork, Crystal provides the support needed every step of the way.

Originally from Vermont, Crystal currently lives in Mebane with husband George, son Elijah and 2 dogs, Munchkin & Fozzie. The whole family loves to watch movies and enjoy traveling as often as they can.

Real Estate has been in Vernadette’s DNA since she was very young. Born and raised on the Northside of Chicago, her parents were involved in multiple real estate investments throughout the city. Soon after she moved to Omaha, NE where she was offered an opportunity to work on a legal team at a local real estate investment firm (best of both worlds!). That led to her love of all things real estate as she transitioned from legal team to closing coordinator to title and transaction manager.

With experience in real estate and legal transactions, Vernadette is committed to helping all clients through the closing process with ease. Having worked with clients from all over the country, her knowledge and customer service is second to none.

Catherine Steele, Staging Manager

Through a series of careers and a deep love of all things art and design, Catherine found her way to Martha Newport Realty Group. But it wasn't real estate that solidified her appreciation for this hard-working group. Catherine's background in life coaching, restaurant management and classical music taught her a foundational lesson: communication is key when it comes to human connection. When she sold her house with Martha and her team, Catherine discovered a shared commitment to authenticity and communication to get the job done. Now, as Staging Manager, she is dedicated to making sure that every client has a fantastic experience just like she did.
